PodCastle is a weekly fantasy podcast producing audio performances of fantasy short fiction, including all the sub genres of fantasy, including magical realism, urban fantasy, slipstream, high fantasy, and dark fantasy. PodCastle launched on 1 April 2008 as part of Escape Artists, Inc., which also produces Escape Pod and Pseudopod.
PodCastle has released hundreds of stories written by authors such as Peter S. Beagle, Nancy Kress, Jeff VanderMeer, N.K. Jemisin, Kelly Link and Ken Liu. It has been a finalist for the Parsec Awards twice (in 2010 and 2015) and won the Best Podcast - Fictional award at the Academy of Podcasters in 2017.
PodCastle is distributed under a Creative Commons license that allows non-commercial redistribution, requires attribution, and forbids derivatives. The fiction itself remains copyrighted by its respective authors. PodCastle contracts with authors for non-exclusive audio rights and pays professional rates.
Escape Artists launched the floating PodCastle with Rachel Swirsky as founding editor and Ann Leckie as assistant editor. Swirsky left in 2010 to focus on her own writing. Editors Anna Schwind and Dave Thompson stepped down at the end of March 2015; Leckie continues to serve as associate editor.
Starting in 2015, Rachael K. Jones and Graeme Dunlop shared editing and hosting duties, along with regular guest host M. K. Hobson. In May of 2016, Rachael stepped down as co-editor and Jen R. Albert joined Graeme as the new co-editor. In January 2017, Graeme left the co-editor position and Khaalidah Muhammad-Ali took his place.
As of January 2019, C. L. Clark has stepped in for Khaalidah, and she and Jen helm the flying castle.
